Springfield, Ill – Illinois State Representative Stephanie Kifowit (D-Oswego) achieved a significant legislative victory last week as her proposed bill, HB 612, successfully passed out of the House. This bill, aimed at safeguarding crucial tax exemptions for Illinois Veterans, marks a pivotal step forward in supporting those who have served our nation. HB 612, championed by Rep. Kifowit, focuses on amending the Property Tax Code to ensure that Veterans, especially those from World War II, receive the recognition and support they deserve. The bill expands the Disabled Veteran’s Homestead Exemption to include Veterans of World War II, irrespective of their level of disability. This means that these esteemed Veterans will receive a 100% reduction in their property’s assessed value, translating to a $0 property tax bill, and they will no longer need to reapply for the exemption annually.
