AURORA, Ill. – Remaining accessible to the community, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, will host a Virtual Town Hall discussion on July 29th at 5 pm on Zoom in addition to streaming it her Facebook page ILDistrict84.
“I believe that there are a lot of individuals that do not realize how important the state Human Rights Commission or the City Human Relations Commission are to our thriving community,” said Kifowit. “I am honored to host this town hall to allow people the opportunity to learn about their important work in our region.”
Kifowit will be joined by the State of Illinois Human Rights Commissioner Steve Andersson, who was appointed by Gov. Pritzker to serve on the Illinois Human Rights Commission after his time as a state legislator where he championed legislation such as the ERA initiative, the Equal Pay Act and the LGBTQ inclusion curriculum bill.
Also joining the discussion will be the City of Aurora Human Relations Commission Chair William Small and Secretary Ryan Maley. Both have been members of the Aurora Human Relations Commission for years. Chair Small has owned a small business in Aurora for over 25 years and is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Quad County African American Chamber of Commerce, Unity Partnership, OPUS Chamber Music Camp and Christian Brothers College High School. Secretary Maley is currently the Vice President of Stratence Partners, providing strategy, pricing and analytics services in North America. Maley has also served on the Illinois Task Force for Social Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Enterprise.
“Discrimination should never be tolerated in our community,” continued Kifowit. “These dedicated individuals continue to use their combined decades of experience to provide a valuable resource to individuals who have been subjected to discrimination and can understand what rights they have under Illinois law.”
The Illinois Human Rights Commission is dedicated to promoting freedom from unlawful discrimination as defined by the Illinois Human Rights Act – which includes retaliation. The City of Aurora Human Rights Commission seeks to promote understanding among and preserve the recognized rights of residents and those who interact in Aurora. Both organizations address discrimination in the areas of race, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical/mental disability, and military status.

Kifowit Reflects on Special Session and Balanced Budget during COVID-19 Crisis
May 24, 2020
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Following passage of a state budget that prioritizes health care and essential services, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, issued the following statement Saturday:
“First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge all of our frontline workers during this difficult time and thank all the nurses, doctors and first responders for their courage while they fight COVID-19 every day. With these workers in mind, I joined my colleagues in passing a responsible budget that prioritizes public health, health care and supporting small mom and pop businesses along with helping individuals with unemployment support while making sure we support domestic violence shelters, homelessness prevention and senior services.
“In addition to directing over $400 million toward COVID-19 testing and local health efforts, the budget keeps our promise to fund pensions and maintains our commitment to education from early childhood through college. We also added flexibility to the budget, granting the governor and state agencies the ability to allocate resources as effectively as possible during the uncertainty of a pandemic.
“Homeowners deserve relief, and I backed an effort to immediately suspend property tax late payment fees and to create a one year deferral on exemption reapplication paperwork for seniors, Veterans and disabled individuals.
“We also took steps to streamline workers’ compensation in the wake of COVID-19, adding protections and increasing the amount of unemployment that workers in need can receive.
“While there is uncertainty ahead of us, proactive steps have been taken to help families during this unprecedented crisis. More work remains, and I look forward to working with our community as we handle this crisis.”

Kifowit Supports Feeding the Frontline through BINGO Challenge
April 10,2020
Oswego, IL – With many individuals inside, Representative Stephanie Kifowit has created a COVID-19 BINGO card to help raise awareness during this time of crisis and each completed card will generate a meal donation through Feeding the Frontline initiative through the month of April.
The BINGO card was posted on Friday to Representative Kifowit’s Facebook page, @ILDistrict84, and on her website ILDistrict84.com for people to download and enjoy. Spaces include boxes to remind people to cover their mouth and face when they go out, complete the census or try a new recipe, for example.
“During stressful times such as this, I think it is important to provide people with a bit of fun,” states Kifowit. “This BINGO card will remind people about important guidelines such as social distancing and also support a great cause”.
For each selfie posted with a completed card, and identified as #ILDistrict84, Kifowit will donate one meal to Feeding the Frontline initiative through Reulands Food Service in Aurora throughout the month of April. This recently born movement allows restaurants similar to Reulands to provide meals for our healthcare workers and other first responders. The donation will cover the cost of making and delivering meals to local hospitals including Rush Copley Hospital, which is in the 84th District.
“This is one way that residents can help support our front line workers, by providing them with a meal as they work long hours to help with those that are ill”, continued Kifowit. “We as a community are doing a great job of helping those in the healthcare industry, and I am happy to do my part.”

Kifowit Responds to Governor’s Budget Address, Looks to Priorities in New Spending Plan
February 19, 2020
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, issued the following statement following Governor J.B. Pritzker’s budget address Wednesday: “The governor’s budget address laid out a road map to continue to improve the financial condition of the State of Illinois."
“It is very important to me to ensure that we continue to pay down old bills and meet our pension obligations. Additionally, we have to continue to work towards properly funding our schools and reduce property taxes, in addition to strengthening the Department of Children and Family Services so that we do not have another child die under our care. Meeting the essential needs of our more vulnerable residents need to be a top priority for the state."
“I appreciate the vision and dedication of the Governor to work with the General Assembly to pass a balanced budget that continues to reverse the damaging effects of the budget impasse. Last year we took important, bipartisan steps to put Illinois back on track. I am confident that once again we can pass a responsible spending plan on schedule that will build a stronger Illinois for all residents.”

Kifowit Files Legislation to Mandate Memorial Day Recognition in the IL House of Representatives
January 23, 2020
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Representative Stephanie Kifowit (D-Oswego), the only US Marine Corps female Veteran in the IL House of Representatives, has filed legislation that will mandate Memorial Day be recognized in the Illinois House of Representatives. House Bill 4214 and its companion House Resolution 671, amends the General Assembly Operations Act and creates a new House Rule 9.5 to mandate that the Speaker of the House of Representatives shall not convene the House of Representatives in regular of perfunctory session after 4:00 pm on the day before Memorial Day or before 4:00 pm on Memorial Day. It further mandates that the Speaker of the House of Representatives shall include in the business on the Daily Calendar for the House of Representatives for that session a remembrance ceremony for Memorial Day.
“For many years, I have been forced to be absent from my seat on the Illinois House Floor in order to honor the men and women who lost their lives in service to our country in cemetery visits the morning of Memorial Day. It is time for all members of the Illinois House of Representatives to be able to be in their hometowns and to honor those who gave so much” states Kifowit. “The Illinois House of Representatives should recognize that nothing is more important than honoring those that have lost their lives in defense of our freedom and liberties”.
“The Department of Illinois Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) supports this legislation, which aims to shut down session for a 24-hour period to allow Illinois lawmakers time to convene with the Veterans in their home districts, and to pay tribute and high honor to the Veterans whose lives were lost in combat operations on behalf of a grateful nation” stated Jay Hoffman, Legislative Director of the Department of Illinois Veterans of Foreign Wars. “This would allow our legislators the ability to briefly break from the business of state government to reflect and respect the reason why we are able to have duly elected officials that are able to conduct state business, and that reason is our Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice”.
Memorial Day, originally Decoration Day, was a day to honor union soldiers who had died in the Civil war. After WWI, it was expanded to honor all men and women who died in any war or military action. WWII, it was formally renamed Memorial Day and was designated in 1971 to be observed on the last Monday in May.
“On this one day of the year, we are to collectively pause in remembrance of the supreme sacrifice made by ordinary Americans in service to our Nation” writes Denise Williams, President, Department of Illinois American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. Proud mother of PFC Andrew Meari, KIA 11/01/10 Afghanistan. “This is a day of somber reflection of their gift to us all, and of joyous appreciation of what they have secured for us with the most selfless sacrifice”.
There is no record of a remembrance ceremony for the fallen service members in the Illinois House of Representatives and committees began meeting at 9:00 am on Memorial Day for 2019. The Illinois State Senate does not indicate Memorial Day as a session day on their calendar for 2020.
