Kifowit Hosting Vaccine and Flu Shot Clinic in Aurora
December 30, 2021
AURORA, Ill. – The first Vaccine and Flu Shot Clinic of the new year is being hosted by State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, and Ald. Patty Smith. They are hosting a COVID-19 vaccine and flu shot clinic on Wednesday, January 5 from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the Eola Road Branch of the Aurora Public Library, located at 555 S. Eola Rd., meeting room 108.
"With the recent uptick of COVID-19 and flu cases, I encourage everyone in our community to start the new year by getting vaccinated or receive a booster,” said Kifowit. “Vaccines are one of the most important preventative measures that we can all take to keep our community safe. Vaccine clinics are a great opportunity to learn about the benefits of getting vaccinated and to either get your first, second or booster doses of the COVID vaccine and/or a flu shot.”
“In light of the current surge of Covid-19 and flu cases the vaccine clinics are an important tool to help all of us be protected from infection and serious illness. It’s important to remember that protecting yourself also helps protect our community. This is a team effort." said Smith.
Kifowit and Smith are partnering with VNA Health Care to host their vaccine and flu shot clinic. People under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines will be available, as well as the annual flu shot. Individuals getting their second dose or booster should bring their vaccination card. While walk-ins are welcomed, individuals are encouraged to register at ILDistrict84.com/events. For inquiries and concerns, please call 630-585-1308.
“As the pandemic continues to affect our loved ones and friends throughout the state, it is critical that everyone takes the appropriate steps to combat this disease,” said Kifowit. “By working together, getting vaccinated, wearing masks, social distancing and using hand sanitizer, our entire community can be healthier and stronger.”
"I echo the comments of Rep. Kifowit," said Smith. "That combining vaccines with other preventative measures—masks, social distancing, hand washing and using sanitizer will help us get through this surge more quickly so we can begin to see a decrease in cases.”

Kifowit Presents Certificate to the Metea Valley Girls’ Volleyball State Champions
December 14, 2021
AURORA, Ill. – While congratulating the Metea Valley Girls’ Varsity Volleyball team for their heroic state championship, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, presented the team with a state certificate officially congratulating them on the amazing performance. She also presented Coach Dave McDonald with a personal certificate as he was awarded Coach of the year.
“The way these girls rallied back to win the state championship is a great example of teamwork and dedication to their sport,” said Kifowit. “I would like to congratulate our great student-athletes on such an amazing and successful season, bringing Metea Valley their first state title in any sport, either boys or girls.”
Last month, the Metea Valley Mustangs went on to win their 24th consecutive match against Mother McAuley to win the state championship. The Mustangs started the match by dropping the first set to the Mighty Macs by 10 points, but rallied back to win the next two sets to take home the state title. The Mustangs were led by their defense and Coach Dave McDonald who was later awarded the Coach of the year.
The come-from-behind was nothing short of a triumph as Mother McAuley’s storied Volleyball program has more state championships (15) than years Metea Valley has been in existence since being founded in 2009.

Kifowit Appointed to Commission Tasked with State’s Recovery from Pandemic and Other Economic Challenges
November 17, 2021
AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, will be working with lawmakers, state agencies, and other stakeholders to assess the state’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and create actionable goals that can improve recovery efforts as a new appointee to the Restore Illinois Collaborative Commission.
“The last 1.5 years have put a serious burden on the economic development of our local and state economies, and it is imperative that leaders from across the state work together to develop viable solutions to the many challenges that businesses and the labor force are facing during these times,” said Kifowit. “Regardless of people’s politics, we must work together to ensure that small and local businesses have the support to provide services to the community and that workers have flexibility to meet the many demands of their employers.”
As the chairperson on the State Government Administration Committee and a member of the Revenue and Finance Committee, Kifowit has reviewed and assessed legislative proposals that are aimed to improve state government operations, provide adequate revenue streams for state services and grants, and protect middle-class families from undue tax burdens. She hopes to bring this expertise to the Restore Illinois Collaborative Commission so that families and businesses throughout the state are not shouldering the economic burden caused by the pandemic.
"The economic recovery of our state needs to be taken seriously, especially in light of the upcoming holidays and backlogs within the supply chain,” said Kifowit. “Despite high levels of vaccination rates, our economy is still facing challenges from the pandemic. Through intensive research and debate, it is my hope that we will develop plans to build a robust economy that is resilient to future pandemics and other crises.”

Kifowit Passes Legislation to Urge Congress to Award Congressional Gold Medals to Korean War Veterans
November 9, 2021
AURORA, Ill. – Continuing her efforts to support Veterans and ensure they receive the recognition they deserve, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, has passed legislation to urge Congress to authorize the President to present Congressional Gold Medals to all Korean War Veterans in recognition of their service and sacrifice for our country.
"It’s about time we officially recognize and acknowledge the sacrifices our brave service men and women endured during their time in Korea,” said Kifowit. “Those who honorably served in the Korean War along with our allies to protect our democratic morals have waited far too long and deserve our recognition.”
Kifowit, a former marine and chair of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, passed Senate Joint Resolution 34 (SJR 34) during veto session in late October ahead of the upcoming Veterans’ Day. SJR 34 urges both Congress and President Biden to present Congressional gold Medals to Veterans who served under the United Nations Command (UNC) during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.
“It is important that Congress and President Biden continue to support our troops and act now,” said Kifowit. “We must acknowledge our heroes and let these medals stand as evidence that the Forgotten War is no longer forgotten, but that our Veterans’ heroic efforts be remembered forever.”

Kifowit Named to National Leadership Council of the Elected Officials to Protect America (EOPA) Focusing on Environmental Issues and Climate Change
September 30, 2021
AURORA, Ill. – In recognition of her leadership on environmental challenges facing Illinois, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, has been named to the National Leadership Council for the Elected Officials to Protect America (EOPA) organization.
“It is an honor to be able to work with such an amazing group of state and local legislators as we meet to discuss the environmental challenges that are facing our country,” said Kifowit. “We know that we must continue our path towards clean, renewable energy by building the proper infrastructure to help us sustain our environment and fight back against climate change.”
Kifowit was recently named to National Leadership Council for EOPA, and earlier in September she spoke with other state and local elected officials from around the country, members of Congress, and members of the Biden administration at a White House Climate Emergency Summit that was held both in-person and virtually.
The summit focused on finding solutions to help solve the climate crisis, ensure environmental justice, protect land and waterways, and rebuild infrastructure to preserve the environment and create solar and new energy jobs. Kifowit was able to highlight the recent energy bill that both the House and Senate passed, which will bring jobs to the region and build sustainable groundwork to help Illinois drastically reduce carbon emissions.

As an outspoken leader on creating clean energy jobs, Representative Kifowit will contribute her valuable experience, serving our Nation as an elected official and as a Veteran of the Armed Forces, to our network of lawmakers working to protect our planet and people,” said Dominic Frongillo, EOPA Co-Founder and Executive Director. “Lawmakers across the nation advise our work on solving the climate crisis, ensuring environmental justice, and protecting our lands and waters. We educate through value-based storytelling and connecting elected officials to inspire strong environmental leadership. EOPA is also the only national organization mobilizing Veterans who are lawmakers on the environment.”

September 29,2021
AURORA, Ill. – In an effort to collect essential items for families in the community, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, is announcing two upcoming donation drives at her office, located at 1677 Montgomery Rd., Suite #116 in Aurora.

For additional information for the CUPS Bra donation drive, please visit www.cupsbradrive.com.
“As we finish out 2021, and look towards the holiday season, it is so important to give back to our community,” said Kifowit. “These donations really help struggling families during a difficult time of year and I am honored to be a part of paying it forward and providing these important items of everyday life.”
For more information about the donation drives, please contact Kifowit’s District office at 630-585-1308 or email her office at [email protected].

Kifowit-Backed Law Creates the Veterans’ Ailments Task Force
September 23, 2021
AURORA, Ill. – Continuing her efforts to protect Veterans and provide much needed resources to Veterans who have service-related ailments, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, worked to pass a new law that creates an official task force to help solve disparities between state and federal issues regarding service-related ailments and disability compensation.
"Too many Veterans fall through the cracks because of difficult jurisdiction disputes about who should be supporting and protecting a Veteran with a service-related ailment,” said Kifowit. “This task force will take a deep dive into the many disability claims that have been stagnant for far too long and work to come up with solutions that will improve the daily lives of Veterans in Illinois.”
After learning about the backlog of unpaid Veterans Affairs (VA) medical claims dating back years, Kifowit introduced legislation to create the Illinois Veterans’ Service-Related Ailments Task Force to asses ways the state can improve the rate at which disability compensation claims are approved by the federal government and help solve disparities between state and federal jurisdictions. The Task force will be required to meet at least once every 2 months and consists of 15 members.
“I am honored to be part of the solution that will help the many Veterans who are struggling to make ends meet due to no fault of their own receive the much-needed care and assistance they deserve,” said Kifowit. “This important task force will take on very difficult challenges as we work to provide our Veterans with the correct resources.”
House Bill 1815 was signed into law by Gov. Pritzker in late August. For more information on HB 1815 or any other legislative questions, please contact Kifowit’s full-time constituent office at 630-585-1308 or email [email protected].

Kifowit Highlights Extension of the Expiration Dates for Driver’s Licenses and State ID Cards
July 1, 2021
Aurora, Ill. – Continuing to advocate for residents in the district, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, is reminding residents about the announcement from the Secretary of State’s office to extend the expiration dates of Illinois Driver’s Licenses and state ID cards until Jan. 1, 2022.
“There are many residents who are worried about rushing to the Secretary of State’s office because they either have an expired ID or it will be expiring soon,” said Kifowit. “Extending the expiration dates allows residents to not have to worry and rush to the DMV where a minor inconvenience might turn into a whole day’s chore.”
Earlier this week, after legislation that was supported by Kifowit passed to allow the Secretary of State’s office to exercise emergency powers, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that his office will be extending the expiration dates for driver’s licenses and state ID cards that have expired or will be expiring in 2021 to Jan. 1, 2022. However, this extension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) and CDL learner’s permits.
Kifowit continues to urge residents in the 84th district to consider using online services when possible to decrease heavy in-person customer volume. To renew a new driver’s license or state ID card online, as well as purchase license plate stickers, please visit the Secretary of State’s office website at www.cyberdriveillinois.com.
“This extension will give some peace of mind to our residents so they don’t feel the need to all rush to the office at once, especially while we are still working our way out of a pandemic,” said Kifowit. “It might also be easier for residents to visit the Secretary of State’s website and renew their licenses and ID cards rather than visit in-person and wait in line.”
For more information, please contact Kifowit’s full-time constituent office at 630-585-1308 or email Stephanie.kifowit@att.net.

Kifowit Passes Legislation to Create the Veterans Service-Related Ailments Task Force
June 24, 2021
AURORA, Ill. – Continuing to protect Illinois Veterans, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, has passed legislation to create the Veterans Service-Related Ailments Task Force to work along the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA) to find new, efficient ways to help the IDVA advocate for Veterans so they can receive world-class healthcare.
“Over the years we have fielded many complaints from Veterans and Veteran Organizations stating that something needs to be done to systematically improve how they receive health care and medical claims,” said Kifowit. “The Veterans Service-Related Ailments Task Force is a task force made by Veterans, for Veterans to find new solutions that will make healthcare for our service men and women more efficient and effective.”
After reports that various community based hospitals are experiencing a backlog of unpaid VA medical claims dating back years, the legislature is seeking legislative changes to address many issues. Kifowit passed legislation to create the task force to review and make recommendations regarding Veterans’ service-related ailments that are not recognized by the US Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA); and assess ways in which the state can improve the rate at which disability compensation claims are approved by the federal government, solving disparities between state and federal jurisdictions.
The task force will be required to meet once every two months and report their findings to the General Assembly and the Governor by the end of 2022.
“Creating this task force is a good first step to find ways we could better protect Veterans in Illinois,” said Kifowit. “I’m excited to work along the task force to provide oversight and solutions to the IDVA to ensure our service men and women can receive some of the best health care in the country.”

Kifowit-Backed Measure Will Lower the Fees on Trailers
June 15, 2021
AURORA, Ill. – In response to constituent concerns about the increased cost of trailer fees, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, co-sponsored legislation to lower the annual registration fee on trailers to help residents save money.
“By working in a bi-partisan fashion with my colleagues to pass a bill that reduces this fee will save not only Illinois residents and small non-profits, such as Boy Scouts, significant money,” said Kifowit. “We identified an issue that constituents and groups such as A.B.A.T.E. brought to us and we worked together, to provide an agreed solution by both parties.”
Kifowit co-sponsored Senate Bill 58 to reduce the annual registration fee for flat weight trailers weighing 3,000 lbs. or less from $118 to $36. The previous fee of $118 annually was extremely burdensome for Illinois residents, small businesses, non-profits and outdoors groups, that are required to use a trailer to transport heavy objects, vehicles or supplies and gear, that would otherwise not be able to fit in a vehicle. SB 58 passed both the House and Senate with unanimous, bi-partisan support. When signed by the governor, the fee reduction will take effect on January 1, 2022.
“This was an important measure that we were able to support in a bipartisan manner to directly respond to the concerns of Illinoisans and groups all across the state,” said Kifowit. “This is an example of how we can work across the aisle to listen to our constituents as we move forward to work on bigger issues like ethics reforms, getting the state back on the right fiscal track after a global pandemic and creating jobs and programs to protect our more vulnerable residents.”
For more information about Senate Bill 58, or any other legislation discussed over the recent spring legislative session, please contact Kifowit’s full-time constituent service office at 630-585-1308 or email [email protected].

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Seeing a need to protect pet owners from losing their beloved animals, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, has passed a measure to allow families in government-subsidized housing to keep their pets even while moving to a different residence.
“Many times, pets can become as cherished as family members,” said Kifowit. “Pet owners should not be forced into the devastating decision of deciding between staying in a home and giving up their pet.”
Kifowit’s Senate Bill 154 would allow tenants of affordable, government-subsidized homes to be allowed to keep at least two cats or one dog that weighs under 50 pounds. The proposal does not impact service animals or service animals in training.
It is estimated that about a quarter of the pets that were surrendered to shelters and humane societies in Illinois were due to either landlord issues or moving to a location that did not allow an individual to keep their pet. With pet ownership on the rise, it is expected that the number of surrendered pets will also increase.
“It’s no secret that the number one reason people are forced to give up their loved animals is because of housing restrictions,” said Kifowit. “This legislation will lift many burdensome restrictions, allow people to keep their pets and will help the shelters and humane societies avoid being overrun with too many animals.”
Senate Bill 154 passed both chambers in the General Assembly and will now head to the governor for approval.
For more information about Senate Bill 154 please contact Kifowit’s full-time constituent office at 630-585-1308 or email her at [email protected].

New Leadership Focuses on COVID Recovery, Developing a Responsible State Budget
June 1, 2021
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, issued the following statement upon the General Assembly’s adjournment of the spring legislative session this week:
“Earlier this year, we underwent a refreshing, long-sought-after change to House leadership as my colleagues and I came together to elect a new Speaker of the House, Emanuel ‘Chris’ Welch. He will continue to bring a new prospective to Springfield as we work together to focus on solutions that will help every day residents of Illinois.
“After the past year and a pandemic-induced economic recession, the General Assembly was tasked to work together to find bipartisan solutions for a post COVID-19 Illinois with proposals that will create jobs, put residents back to work and get our economy back on track. To address the immediate needs of all Illinoisans, we passed legislation making healthcare more accessible, providing emergency housing relief to renters and landlords, improving energy savings for homeowners and providing tax credits to small businesses.
“As Chair of the Veteran Affairs Committee, I worked with Democrats and Republicans to investigate the failed practices at Veteran homes in Illinois during the pandemic. We’re working to hold individuals accountable for the mistakes that were made and to find solutions for protecting these honorable men and women.
“We were also tasked with putting together a responsible budget that must reflect the difficult year we’ve had in 2020 and early 2021. It was necessary to craft a budget that had significant cost savings while ensuring we would help our local economies out of the aftermath of a global pandemic. It was important that we were able to maintain care for our more vulnerable residents, reduce the tax burden felt by so many Illinoisans and fully fund our public schools.
“I look forward to continuing the hard work we have started this past spring as we look to rebuild our communities and rebound from the global pandemic.”

Kifowit Passes Measure Requiring Trauma Training for School Personnel and Administrators
May 24, 2021
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Continuing her efforts to protect students dealing with trauma, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, passed a measure out of committee that will require all school personnel, officials and administrators to complete adequate training dealing with trauma relating to student behavior and learning.
“Each year, we see how trauma can impact our students’ ability to perform in the classroom and continue their education,” said Kifowit. “We need to make sure we can educate our school officials to identify these warning signs and how to properly address these issues to ensure that our children can continue to receive a world-class education.”
Kifowit’s legislation, Senate Bill 2109, requires school personnel, administrators and board members to be trained and licensed in how trauma affects students’ academic performance and behavior. The training will include how to identify trauma in students and what policies and solutions might be available to ensure students’ well-being. SB 2109 has passed out of the Elementary & Secondary Education: Administration, Licensing Charter Schools on Thursday and will be heard on the House Floor.
Currently, school board members and administrators must complete professional development leadership training that covers topics in education and labor law, financial oversight and accountability, and fiduciary responsibilities. Senate Bill 2109 expands the training requirements to include trauma informed practices.
“My legislation highlights the need to train our school officials and administrators so they can understand how trauma can affect our children’s education and allows them to come up with plans that will proactively benefit all our students,” said Kifowit. “This is the first step to ensure that our school officials understand what it’s like to be a student now and how we can build a system that will help all our children in times of need.”

House Veterans Affairs Committee Held Hearing on LaSalle Veterans Home Failures
May 13, 2021
Committee members focused on preventing future managerial and operational errors that contributed to the tragic COVID-19 outbreak
Today, the House Veterans Affairs Committee held a hearing on the tragic, preventable COVID-19 outbreak at the LaSalle Veterans Home, which resulted in thirty-six saddening deaths. Witnesses from the hearing included deputy governor Sol Flores, Department of Veterans (IDVA) Affairs director Terry Prince and assistant director Anthony Vaughn, and Department of Public Health (IDPH) director Dr. Ngozi Ezike.
Following the investigatory report from the Illinois Department of Human Services inspector general, today’s hearing featured a series of hard, direct questions from a group of bipartisan legislators.
“The goal of today’s hearing was to understand the leadership and operational gaps that led to this tragedy so we can determine what legislative recourse we should pursue,” said committee chairwoman Stephanie Kifowit. “This is a grave matter that is far above politics and partisanship. The State of Illinois failed our veterans, and we need to work together to prevent this from ever happening again.”
In the hearing, Representative Yednock, whose district covers the LaSalle Veterans Home, zeroed in on the staffing gaps that contributed to the crisis, including the lack of a senior home administrator who would have been in charge of managing medical care.
“Unfortunately, this tragedy could have been prevented. We must keep top medical positions filled so that expertise can inform day-to-day operations and care,” said representative Lance Yednock. “Veterans have dedicated their lives to our state and country, and we owe them much more than the kind of neglect outlined in the Inspector General’s (IG) report. I am confident new leadership at Veterans Affairs will help. Still, we need to exercise our oversight responsibility as legislators to make sure we close the gaps, protect our veterans, and take care of anyone under the care of state-run homes.”
Members also focused on the causes of the hiring delays at state homes for veterans, such as workforce development and access to protective equipment.
“If as a state we ask people to enter careers of medical and health care, we need to make sure they can provide these essential services while protecting themselves too,” said representative Maura Hirschauer.
“We also need to make sure our facilities and medical staff never fall out of compliance in the first place,” added representative Yang Rohr. “Thoughtful care and oversight means developing proactive solutions, and that will be our north star as legislators.”
Following this hearing, committee members will continue their legislative inquiry for additional details to inform legislative solutions that will be considered this year.
“Serious, sober work lies ahead to make sure we exercise our legislative oversight and collaborate with the Senate, Governor’s office, IDPH and IDVA to get this right,” said vice-chairman Michael Halpin. “The IG’s report outlined what failed; now our job is to identify solutions.”
“Protecting our veterans is one of my top priorities,” said representative Dave Vella. “I appreciate the answers provided today so we and our constituents understand what happened, and we are assured there will be continued action with haste and thoroughness.”
In the meantime, chairwoman Kifowit and members express appreciation for and confidence in director Terry Prince as the new leader of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Committee members also thank Dr. Ezike and deputy governor Sol Flores for their honest assessment and ongoing commitment to our veterans and their care.

Stephanie Kifowit (D-Oswego) was named the 2020 ABATE Representative of the Year along with Rep. Tim Butler (R-Springfield) as the 2021 ABATE Representative of the Year. Kifowit Legislation Creates Illinois Youth Advisory Council
April 21, 2021
AURORA, Ill. – Continuing her work to increase youth engagement and representation in state government, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, passed legislation on Tuesday creating the Illinois Youth Advisory Council to facilitate communication between youth in Illinois and elected officials on the issues, interests and needs important to youth.
“Several years ago, I created a Youth Advisory Council locally to invite high school and college students to share their ideas with me and encourage them to make positive change through civic engagement,” Kifowit said. “It was the spirit and passion from this group that inspired me to create a statewide advisory council for more youth to get involved and I’m excited about the opportunity it will bring for many more young leaders across Illinois.”
Kifowit’s House Bill 594 creates the Illinois Youth Advisory Council. The Council will be made up of 20 members, one appointed from each congressional district in Illinois and two at-large members. All members must be Illinois residents, between 16 and 22 years old, and enrolled at a high school, community college or university in Illinois.
The Council will be responsible for engaging with the General Assembly by drafting legislation, offering testimony during committee hearings, providing positions on issues pending before the legislature and performing other activities impacting issues facing youth in Illinois. Kifowit’s legislation passed the House and now awaits consideration in the Senate.
“Young adults are the leaders of our next generation and it’s important for them to have a seat at the table on issues impacting their lives,” Kifowit said. “This Advisory Council will create a new and unique platform for high school and college students from every corner of the state to have a voice in the legislative process.”

Hernandez, Kifowit Bring Redistricting Committee to Aurora to Hear Local Input
April 1, 2021
Aurora, Ill. – State Reps. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, and Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, are working to make local voices heard in Illinois’ redistricting process by bringing a public hearing of the House Redistricting Committee to Aurora on Friday, April 9 at 4 p.m. The hearing will be held at Aurora City Hall, located at 44 E Downer Place in Aurora with limited capacity due to social distancing in addition to requiring masks.
“As we begin the important process of redrawing the state district maps, it is crucial community voices have a clear avenue for their voices to be heard,” said Hernandez. “I am committed to ensuring that our community’s diverse population, especially Black and Latinx voices who have long been pushed to the margins, receive fair and equal representation in our state’s maps.”
“The redistricting process will determine the makeup of our legislative maps for the next ten years and we want to make sure our local communities play a role in that process,” Kifowit said. “These hearings will be a great opportunity to receive public input about the needs of specific communities before legislative maps are created. I strongly encourage those interested to participate or follow along to learn about this important process.”
The hearing is part of Hernandez and Kifowit’s commitment to an open and participatory redistricting process, and is one of 23 scheduled hearings across the state where legislators will receive input from groups and individuals. Members of the public are welcome to share their thoughts on demographic trends they see in their areas, communities of interest, and other information about the region that should inform the process of creating new legislative districts.
Individuals or groups interested in testifying should contact [email protected]. Please include the date and region of the hearing you wish to attend, and a brief description of the testimony you wish to share. Written testimony can also be shared directly with the Redistricting Committee at any time by emailing [email protected].

Kifowit Passes Bill to Provide Foster Youth with Travel Bags to Protect Belongings
March 16, 2021
AURORA, Ill. – To provide dignity and respect to foster youth, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, passed legislation out of committee this week that will require the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to provide travel bags for foster youth instead of what has been common practice of placing children's belongings in a trash bag.
“Many of these children are going through the toughest points of their lives,” said Kifowit. “It is also traumatizing to these children to have their belongings put in a trash bag. The least we can do is provide them with appropriate bags for their valuable items.”
Kifowit’s legislation, House Bill 307, is an initiative of the Foster Care Alumni of America – Illinois Chapter and will give foster youth, who frequently move from house to house, the ability to use they own in a bag that is provided to them by the DCFS for their possessions. Current practice of most children getting their possessions in a garbage bag when they are being moved from a house has been brought to light, and there are a few non-profits that are trying to help these children.
“For many children in the foster program, they are already stressed and feeling depressed. To have their personal items treated akin to trash compounds the situation and profoundly affects these children,” said Kifowit. “My hope is that providing these children with something as small as a tote or travel bag will give foster youth a small sense of comfort while everything else around them seems to be in constant transition.”

Kifowit to Host Community Blood Drive on March 29
March 12, 2021
AURORA, Ill. – Calling on the community to help those in need, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, is encouraging residents to sign-up to donate blood at a community blood drive on Monday, March 29 from noon to 5:00 p.m. at the Old Aurora Library, located at 1 E. Benton St in Aurora.
“Hospitals and medical centers have continued to face difficult decisions about who can receive blood while blood supplies remain scarce throughout the country,” said Kifowit. “Because of how the COVID-19 pandemic has shut down many normal collection procedures over the past year, there is still a very high demand for blood.”
Kifowit will be joined by state Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, state Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego and the DuKane A.B.A.T.E chapter for the community blood drive.
The blood drive will take place indoors, and all attendees are asked to practice social distancing while participating. Masks and photo IDs will be required to participate. Donors must be in good health and feeling well in addition to being at least 17 years of age and 110 pounds. It is recommended to eat something within four hours prior to donating blood.
Appointments are preferred for the event, but walk-ins are also welcome. Donors who are taking medications may be unable to donate blood due to their underlying medical condition. Health precautions will continue to be a priority at this drive. The COVID-19 Anti-body test (CAT) will also be performed on all blood donations as part standard testing.
“Donating blood saves lives,” said Kifowit. “We must come together to support those in our community who are in need of blood. Your donation can end up saving multiple lives, from loved ones, neighbors and vulnerable residents in our region.”

Kifowit Questions Department of Employment Security on Handling of Unemployment Claims
March 4, 2021
AURORA, Ill. – Following the significant increase in unemployment claims due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent issues of delayed payments and fraud, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, participated in a joint House committee hearing on Thursday to seek answers from the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES).
“Since the beginning of the pandemic, my office has been inundated with calls from constituents seeking assistance with unemployment claims,” Kifowit said. “We’ve been working diligently to assist as many people as possible to connect them with their benefits, but there have been significant issues with the Department. Identify fraud, no call back calls, in addition to many other unique issues residents are facing need to be addressed by the Department, and today was the opportunity to start holding the Department accountable.”
With the ability to now hold remote committee meetings, the Illinois House can resume working on behalf of the residents. In her role as chair of the State Government Administration Committee, Kifowit led the joint House committee hearing on Thursday with the Appropriations-General Services Committee and the Labor & Commerce Committee. IDES Director Kristin Richards provided testimony highlighting the metrics on current unemployment cases, their process for responding to claimants and their plans for improving practices in the future in addition to recognizing the issues that everyday individuals and families are struggling with. There are plans for additional committee meetings in the future to continue to address IDES concerns.
“While IDES clearly has a lot of work ahead of it, today’s hearing was a productive conversation and it provided legislators an opportunity to ask questions about issues that we have been seeking answers on for many months and hold the Director accountable,” Kifowit said. “As the pandemic continues to impact our daily lives, I will be working with my colleagues to make sure we are doing all that we can to provide benefits and resources to unemployed individuals and also finds ways to get people back to work.”

Feb. 23, 2021
Aurora, Ill. – State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, has been appointed to serve as chair of the Veterans Affairs and State Government Administration committees for the 2021-2022 legislative session and will also serve on three additional House committees.
“As a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, it is my honor to once again lead the Veteran Affairs House Committee in Springfield to address issues impacting our Veterans including suicide, homelessness, unemployment and support for a return to civilian life,” Kifowit said. “I look forward to working on legislation that will support our service members, their families and Veterans with dignity, honor and respect.”

Kifowit Responds to Governor’s Budget Address, Highlights Priorities Moving Forward
Feb 17, 2021
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Continuing her focus on priorities to help local families, State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, responds to the Governor’s Budget Address and highlights the need for a balanced budget, protecting seniors and high-risk individuals and the need to create good-paying jobs to help rebuild our state’s economy.
“As our state continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, we need a budget that addresses the needs of our communities such as access to affordable healthcare, high quality education, and vital services for those adversely affected by the pandemic,” said Kifowit. “One of our top priorities must be to ensure the efficient and fair distribution of the vaccine while protecting seniors, veterans and high-risk individuals.”
The Governor’s budget proposal does not add any new taxes to local working families while Illinois’ recovery indicates strong pressure will persist into Fiscal Year 22 to maintain most critical government services, especially for those disproportionately affected by COVID-19. The Governor’s office announced today a balanced budget for the Fiscal Year 2021 with keeping spending flat. That comes from a mix of cutting state spending as well as closing off some corporate loopholes.
“Unfortunately, these unprecedented times through the pandemic have taken a toll on Illinois’ budget and we must continue to prioritize the safety of our residents,” said Kifowit. “This is only the beginning of the long process for legislators as we work together to legislate a balanced budget that protects our most vulnerable residents and help families that have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
